Product Care & Maintenance

How do I care for my cricket bat?

There are many dos and don'ts when you are caring for your cricket bat.

Make sure it is protected when in a cricket kit to avoid damage from other gear. Keep it in a cooled place and away from areas where the bat may be affected by water. Make sure to have it fully prepared before use, this includes getting it knocked in, putting the right amount of oil on it, and making sure the toe guard is on and the edges are nicely rounded.

Do not leave your bat out in the hot sun as well as in places that produce a lot of heat such as a hot garage or the boot of the car. avoid any moisture on the bat including general water use and rainfall.

More information can be found here.

How do I care for my pads and gloves?

Your cricket gloves and pads as well as other protectors are very important and maintaining them can increase their lifespan massively. Things you can do to maintain the protectors are:

  1. Are the Pads/Gloves out after use
  2. Clean off any dirt or marks
  3. Control the odour with sports deodorising sprays or baking soda
  4. Make sure to store them in a dry location that doesn't constrict the pads/gloves too much and doesn't change the shape of the straps

When should I replace my gear?

You should replace your cricket gear when it shows signs of significant wear, damage, or reduced protection. For items like helmets, pads, and gloves, look for cracks, loose fittings, worn padding, or reduced shock absorption.

Major cracks across the bat can be at the point of no return and may be when you need to look for a new bat. Other cracks and minor damage can usually be repaired by a professional and it comes down to whether the bat is still pinging or not.

Regular players may need to replace high-use items more frequently, while occasional players can expect longer lifespans. When in doubt, prioritise safety; if your gear no longer offers reliable protection or performance, it’s time for an upgrade.

What's a good amount of gear I should own?

The answer depends on how often you play and what level you are at.

Casual/junior level:

At this level when you either not playing too often or you are a growing kid who will need a new size every year, you will only really need 1 of everything;

  • 1 bat
  • 1 pair of batting gloves
  • 1 pair of batting pads
  • 1 thigh pad
  • 1 box/protector
  • 1 helmet
  • 1 pair of shoes
  • 1 kit bag

An extra pair of batting gloves never hurts as gloves may lose their grip due to sweat.

Regular grade/high level cricket:

At this level you start to go through gear a lot quicker. It is important to have backups in order to be prepared when something is damaged or can no longer be used at that moment. Recommended gear is;

  • a match day bat and a bat for training
  • at least 2 pairs of batting gloves
  • 1 pair of batting pads as they are quite a durable piece of equipment. You may require more at an elite level
  • 1 thigh pad
  • 1 helmet
  • 1 box/protector
  • 1 pair of shoes
  • 1 kit bag
  • maybe an extra pair of socks as well

What is the difference in willow in a cricket bat?

The difference in willow grades comes down to the quality, appearance, and consistency of the wood used in the bat. Higher grades typically have cleaner grains and fewer cosmetic blemishes, while lower grades offer great value with more natural variation.
